It is critical that in order to keep your furnace in working order, you must provide preventative and regular maintenance. That in turn, will increase your system’s longevity. Having regular maintenance by our qualified technicians can make sure your furnace is working correctly and efficiently which will save you money over the course of the winter months…
Please be sure to check the following list to be sure your furnace is ready for the coming winter if you haven’t already called us to come out.
Turning on the thermostat – First be sure to switch from cooling to heating. If you set the temperature a couple of degrees higher than the current room temperature it can come on right away. If you don’t hear that heat kick on within a minute, pull off the cover and make sure the wire connections are secure. A snug connection is needed to make sure the power source to the system is turned on. If it’s still not working, you could check the furnace fan, blower or heat pump — but it likely makes better sense to call in Action Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning and Electric, Inc. It’s our pleasure to serve you here in the Madison area.
Change all the air filters – Most homes have air filters behind vent grills in the wall or ceiling. A single filter in the HVAC itself is normal. We recommend that you change out filters every couple of months. If you have a permanent electrostatic filter you can wash it and reuse it. The cleaning process does keep particles out of your HVAC system and will definitely prolong the life of your furnace equipment. If you have a humidifier filter go ahead and change your humidifier filter and set the humidistat too.
While we talk about this, we recommend that you schedule a furnace checkup with one of our heating & cooling experts, and stay warm all winter.
Be sure to cover the AC condenser – Unless your HVAC is a heat pump (in which case, don’t cover it at all because it runs all year), cover the condenser to protect it from falling icicles. You can also use a board to cover the fan — but don’t wrap it in a moisture-trapping plastic tarp.
If possible clean the heat exchanger – A brushed vacuumed out heat exchanger is always a great idea. When we come out to do your regular scheduled maintenance, or you call to have the system checked we can be sure to look for any cracks that might cause a carbon monoxide leak in your home. Make sure to remove any and all debris from around the unit that might block airflow.
Do lubricate and clean the blower motor – If you are in the know, you may want to first check the owner’s manual to see if your motor is the kind that needs lubricating. If it does, turn off the power, open the cover and clean the caps covering the bearings. Then remove the caps and lubricate the bearings. Of course, we are very happy to provide this service as well.
Make sure to test the igniter switch – Depending on the age of your system, you may need to check and possibly relight the pilot. Most newer systems do have electronic ignitors. If it isn’t working simply push the reset button. If it doesn’t come on, check the breaker and if it still doesn’t come on please give Action Heating & Air Conditioning a call.
Inspect the chimney and carbon monoxide detectors – A lot of older homes, and for sure homes that have regular fires need to check for carbon buildup and birds nests and perhaps even small animals. Periodic inspection is really a safety prevention method we highly recommend. Replacing the carbon monoxide detectors is protection you need from the silent killer. Better to be safe.
If you have an oil-powered furnace we recommend that you replace your filter and nozzle and check the tank level – Oil units do require oil filter changes, burner nozzle cleaning and a complete heat exchanger brushing to make sure they are running efficiently. Oil does not burn as cleanly as gas does and buildup will happen.
