Air Conditioning Maintenance FAQs
What is an AC service valve?
AC service valves are fittings on the refrigerant line that allow technicians to test the air conditioner’s pressure and charge the unit (add refrigerant). Only certified technicians (EPA 608 certification) can work with various refrigerants.
How do I know what refrigerant my AC uses?
The refrigerant type for your air conditioner can be found in at least one of three places. Check the manufacturer’s plate on the AC. Check for a label on the condenser. Check near the air handler.
If your AC says R-22, you have the old, phased-out refrigerant. If you see R-410a, you have the phasing-out refrigerant. Newer AC models may use R-32 or R-454b, while R-134a and R-513a are primarily for commercial air conditioners and chillers.
If you have an older air conditioner, the R-22 is still serviceable if the technician has it in stock. However, it can be challenging to find. A certified technician can also service those with R-410a refrigerant, which is still available on the market, although the EPA plans to phase it out in new air conditioners in 2025.
No matter what refrigerant your AC uses, the law specifies that only certified technicians (EPA 608 certification) can handle it, including servicing and charging your AC.
