Madison, Wisconsin, Oct. 16, 2012 – Focus on Energy, Wisconsin’s statewide program for energy efficiency and renewable energy, recently recognized two local retailers, Blain Supply and Gander Mountain, for achieving notable energy savings through participation in Focus on Energy’s Retail Energy Management Challenge.

The Retail Energy Management Challenge is modeled after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Building Performance with ENERGY STAR® program, which promotes strategic energy management and continuous performance improvement. Participants in the challenge benchmarked energy use at their Wisconsin stores by using EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager™ tool. The tool allows users to assess building energy performance and track savings over time as well as compare performance across multiple buildings.

Tracy Narel with the EPA applauded Focus on Energy, “for its efforts to successfully pilot Building Performance with ENERGY STAR, and for helping participating customers achieve significant energy savings across their Wisconsin properties.” According to Narel, “by deploying the Building Performance with ENERGY STAR program, Focus on Energy helps commercial customers leverage proven ENERGY STAR strategies for developing and implementing ongoing energy management efforts – and provides an integrated solution for customers that are seeking to achieve comprehensive, long-term energy savings.”

With Focus on Energy’s support, Blain Supply and Gander Mountain conducted whole-building performance assessments, developed energy management action plans, and implemented numerous energy projects at select facilities.

With approximately $156,000 in cost savings, Blain Supply, a specialty discount retailer that operates 14 stores in Wisconsin, achieved the Highest Overall ENERGY STAR Portfolio Rating among all Retail Energy Management Challenge participants.

“Our facilities and engineering departments are constantly looking for ways to improve the efficiency of our buildings, whether it’s an innovative concept design for a new location or a retrofit application to an existing building. After meeting with Focus on Energy regarding the Retail Energy Management Challenge, I knew that it would provide a great opportunity to learn more about energy consumption in our buildings.”

Recognized for Most Improved ENERGY STAR Portfolio Rating, Gander Mountain saw an 11 percent portfolio improvement, which amounted to more than $40,000 in savings. The company is a national outdoors equipment retailer with 12 stores in Wisconsin.
