Not far from us here in Madison, north of Green Bay in Door County, check out this ‘70s-era cottage remodel. Are you in love with your vacation lake view and want a real simple design change? This very dated guest bathroom presented quite an initial challenge — in both function and fashion. This new option means accessories will complete the color and finesse you can shop for next.

Empty nesters had previously used this primary space for sons growing up. Time for a remodel, yes even from the whirlpool bath. So how did they make this small unused bath current and better than it ever was? After many discussions, function and storage were the most distinctive options for consideration. Without making a big deal gone bad, adding a shower a final decision was made to do a complete remodel.

Focusing on Function

Casting a wide net for design inspiration, with a few new features added, this new look needed to complement the traditional Cape Cod style and the very first thing was to get rid of the nautical wallpaper. Saying goodbye to the dated cultured Marble countertops and cabinet it was decided that a very thoughtful approach would be best.

A Thoughtful Approach to Bathroom Storage On A Budget

Going from a whirlpool bath to a shower means they also wanted customization and storage but needed something that could fit where the existing bath was and still stay within budget. What you see here in the after shot is the Kohler Choreograph® shower walls with built-in storage.

Remodeling a vacation home, keeping maintenance a goal, no gout lines, and shower walls made sense for the busy family, visiting sons, and frequent guests just made sense. Note the adjustable shelving, which left plenty of space for even large shampoo and conditioner bottles.

Making sure storage was maximized, the desire to keep personal toiletries, extra towels and other essentials was also a goal. A dual-sink vanity provided that space, and its pullout drawers with built-in electrical plugs delighted guests who were quick to plug in their hairdryers. Additional storage in the recessed medicine cabinets, which feature pullout makeup mirrors as well.

This new bathroom with renewed functionality and appearance, wood-panel ceiling, subway tile and muted colors throughout created a beautiful complement to the home’s Cape Cod style. What a transformation right? Simple, clean and elegant yet function made its mark on this special vacation cottage.
